Domestic Accomplishment

So I normally wouldn’t gush all over any minor domestic accomplishment but I’m sure you know that I am addicted to organizational systems. One came together this past weekend when I recalled a recent episode of Good Eats and saw a righteous item in Bed, Bath and Beyond.

Behold! The Spice Cabinet of the Future!

Scott's righteously organized spice cabinet.

OK, so it’s not so much futuristic but it sure is a space saver. Given that the space of a large kitchen would rent in this area for $1800 a month, you don’t often find an overabundance of space in residential kitchens. I’ve been struggling with my spice cabinet for years. As you can see from the picture, it’s much taller than wide and, frankly, with any cabinet-based spice storage the vertical space will be wasted without some additions.

Among custom racks, Lazy Susans, and other spice novelties I saw an episode of Good Eats where Alton Brown had used tins much like the ones I now own but with Velcro bottoms. When I saw the magnetic-bottomed ones in Bed, Bath and Beyond, I picked up 20. I then bought a sheet of zinc-coated steel, cut it to size, and screwed it to the inside of my cabinet.

Pretty cool, eh?

  1. Those containers are cool because they are short and fat rather than tall and skinny. We got them so they would fit in a drawer and you can read the labels on top. I tend to open the lid rather than use the pouring apertures because it is less messy. Did you put those drawers to good use?

  2. Pretty sweet! We could see a copy cat in my kitchen given its super constrained cabinet space. Nicely done, chap!

  3. I love it! Anne and Scott did the same in their place after they saw that episode and I plan on doing the same in my new place with Randle. Way to go Scott!
