My Nieces Are Cooler Than Yours

This past week I hosted my two nieces (Jessie and Maria) with my sister, Molly, for a whirlwind tour of the bay area. They came out around 3:00 on Tuesday and I left them dazed and confused at Union Square around 1:00 on Wednesday. In that time, we saw the wharf, the Haight (for an east-African dinner at Masawa), Chinatown, the top of Coit tower, and the redwoods of Muir woods. I’ve posted the few pictures that met my stringent quality requirements on the image section in this folder.

The thing that I found both amazing and disturbing about these kids in there propensity for giving away their own money. Jessie and Maria, ages 14 and 11, respectively, have set up a web page with two friends detailing the charitable donations to a variety of causes. Their group, the Four Flavored Life Savers, has so far donated $800 from money made from baby sitting and small crimes such as pickpocketing.

OK, so these kids haven’t actually resorted to petty theft to collect the money yet. That’s why I think that you should send them some bucks. I promise you that if you send them money they will put it to good use. You can do so by mailing them for an address, a PayPal account, or some sort at the e-mail address provided on their site. And if they don’t their mother will mercilessly beat them. Believe me, she will.

It is also important that we, as adults, teach them the value of money. By this I mean that once they’ve satiated their need for giving away money, they can enjoy more humanly pursuits such as spending it on themselves. So, please help my nieces grow up. Give them some money. They’re going to want iPods soon enough.

I enjoyed seeing the San Fran photos. Even though Maria passed out, it sounds like it was a great time!
Thanks for plugging the 4 Flavored Life Savers–they are really great kids!
