First 24 Hours in Singapore

It has been a little over 24 hours since I touched down at Singapore Changi airport. My flight arrived a couple hours late thanks to a cabin pressure failure that sent us back to Tokyo shortly after taking off. But I am now safe in my new temporary home and fighting the jetlag as I get ready for my first day of work.

Singapore is hot. The heat stifled me during yesterday’s 8k run. It is possible to maintain a slow pace but any slight incline (or stairs) sends my heart into a frenzy from which recovery is difficult. I can only imagine how the heat will draw sweat through every fiber of my work clothes.

Speaking of work clothes, I am told the custom for my work is to wear suits. I only own one suit which is made of material a bit thick for this climate. I am hoping I can find a few hours away from this week’s all-day off-site to order a few suits. I want to do it this week so I have the suits before my first day in the office.

I will not be going to EMC’s office here until Monday, 5/31. This week we are organizing instruction and discussion around the VCE (VMware-Cisco-EMC) partnership and technologies. Next week I fly to Sydney and Melbourne to meet with more VCE folks in EMC and elsewhere.

This weekend I host my old friend Jeff Waite as he extends his previously brief Singapore layover through the weekend. I am sure that I will not yet have mapped out the city and identified the best locales. But my apartment is on a very happening area on top of Robertson Walk and next to Clarke Quay, so we are only minutes away from dozens of pubs and clubs.

53 minutes until my first work day begins. I am off.
