TV, Couch, Vicodin and Semi-sleep

Saturday morning my team in training ran a 20-mile run through SF as we continue to train for the Oct. 19 Nike Women’s Marathon. Coach Terry–our uber-fit running mentor–told us before the run that priority number one was to stay healthy. Check out the course so the hills don’t scare you in a few weeks, but stay healthy. I wish I had remembered this advice in last night’s softball game.

There I was on second base during the first inning of a softball game with VMware’s team. With a man on first, the defense had a force-out opportunity at third. When the batter lined the ball at the third-baseman, the race to touch third was on. The third baseman ran to touch the base and I slid to extend my feet and beat her there. At that point I heard the snap in my lower leg. Sad to think that this could have been averted if she had known that she could have stood in place and tagged me out.

The team and I were optimistic for the first 30 minutes. Apparently strains can make popping sounds. And my cleat had punctured the pleather base material which certain might have created a popping sound. Furthermore, the swelling wasn’t really that bad. But the pain was worse than anything I had ever felt before. 60 minutes after the injury we saw the X-rays: spiral fracture on the right fibula.

I started to mull over how bad this injury was. My 10/19 marathon is impossible. My mid-October trip to Singapore probably ain’t happening. Shit, I can’t even drive for the next eight weeks. What the hell am I going to do?

I guess I’m not too worried about it right now. I’ve got a decent pile of Vicodins here which make the throbbing football-shaped ankle of mine tolerable. And what two pills per four hours doesn’t do, a glass of wine here or there does. I’ve nearly cleared out my Tivo and am out of Netflix movies. The plan for now is to watch the swelling (and pain) subside so I can cast this leg on Thursday. Then, back to work? We’ll see…

[forgive typos/grammar. I’m not checking it. the pills are kicking in.]
